Nikolaus Miesing
1940-2025
Nikolaus Heinrich Miesing, 85, of Hanover, IL passed away on December 25, 2025. He was born in Oldenburg, Germany, the son of Ewald and Wilhelmine (Evers) Miesing. Nik attended schools in Germany and finished at The Academy of Fine Arts in Koenigslutter. He learned from the best, Hans Stute, Master Carver. His adventurous spirit prompted his move to the USA in pursuit of additional education. He got engaged to M.L., who followed close behind. They remained in the US for the rest of their lives, where they made hundreds of friendships in the Chicago area and Galena. Nik played most instruments, designed and created sculptures, worked on the Washington Cathedral, sculpted plaques for the Prudential Building, and Northwestern University. He knew the art of hand-lettering and carved a 400- pound piece of Kansas limestone for the lobby of the Regnier Center in Kansas. Nik also worked as a HVAC Engineer. And a long list of extracurricular accomplishments included painting, plumbing, wood-working, playing instruments, golfing, electrical, design, tennis, skiing, construction, and a connoisseur of good whiskey….in short, Nik met all the criteria of a RENAISSANCE MAN.
After retiring from a long and successful career in Engineering he purchased some acreage in Woodbine, IL. that reflected his and M.L.’s appreciation for environment while providing an opportunity to maintain both mental and physical fitness: he built a barn, he re-created a pond, he planted 100 Oaks. Nik loved life to the fullest despite recent years of health challenges. Given his sunny and happy disposition, it was only appropriate that Nik would wait to pass on Christmas Day.
He enjoyed his ‘Brown Road Farm’ as he did his domicile in the Galena Territory. If the Territory had decided that they need a mayor, Nik would have been voted in overwhelmingly given his many friends everywhere he went, many of whom he would acquire for life after meeting just once. He was a generous purveyor of advice and expertise to anyone with a request. Among his closest friends, his sense of humor, intelligence, and magnetic personality always made Nik fun to be around in discussing politics or any other topic that came up. He was always positive and was that rare individual that never seemed to have a bad day. He also was a perfect host, when it came to whiskey tasting in his library.
Besides his many varied interests, Nik was a loving and encouraging partner to his wife Marie-Luise, a union that lasted more than 60 years and was especially proud of his children Cornelia (Mathew) and Tobias (Isabelle).
We all miss him dearly as we let him rest in peace while continuing his life ambition.
