Gerit Grimm

Born and raised in the German Democratic Republic, Gerit Grimm studied both in Germany and the United States, earning several degrees. Grimm's work celebrates the rich history of the ceramic figurine in traditional art. Fairy tales, myths, and fables dominate her wheel-thrown sculpture as she pushes the boundaries of her creative process. The bronze-like color of the work is achieved entirely from the stoneware clay body and adds to the old-world feel, inviting the viewer to reminisce about a simpler time. Grimm earned her MA from the University of Michigan and her MFA from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Since 2012, Grimm has been an assistant professor of ceramics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
