Charlotte Kennedy
Charlotte is the first of three children born to Polish immigrant parents (Walter and Anastasia Wilk) in the Humboldt Park area of Chicago.
She is ambidextrous, as nuns encouraged the use of the right hand, and she uses that hand for writing, but uses her left hand for her artwork and playing tennis.
Married at 19 years old, Charlotte raised four children in Villa Park, IL – Karyn, Greg, Robyn, and Sandra Ranke – before completing her Home Economics teaching degree. In her 20 teaching years, she was honored as Illinois Home Economics Teacher of the Year, received a Fulbright Award to teach in England, and her students won several national honors.
In 1976 she restored a log cabin in Galena, Illinois, and in 1989 found her ideal mate in George Kennedy. She writes a summary of her life with him:
I feed, weed, and seed
George prays and pays
I need him and he needs me
Her doctor proclaimed Char “the healthiest senior in my practice,” and vegan cooking can be attributed to that compliment. She writes monthly articles for the Galena Gazette, encouraging fruit, vegetable, grain, and bean meals.
