Barbara Baird

My spark bird was an Indigo Bunting which led me into nature photography. My first sighting took place at the Wild Turkey Bed & Breakfast during my first visit to Galena. Soon after I joined the Chicago Area Camera Clubs Association. We met at Morton Arboretum once a month. The relationship lasted five years until I moved to Galena in 2005.
My educational background includes the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts, National College of Education, Evanston, Illinois; Master of Arts, Purdue University, Hammond, Indiana. Also, The Naturalist Certificate, Morton Arboretum and Wetlands Delineation Certificate Course, Texas A&M University.
My professional history started with an eight-year Land Surveyor Internship. I became an Illinois Professional Land Surveyor in 1975. The founding of Baird Land Surveyors, Ltd. followed in due time. A majority of our work was in Land Acquisition with the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Because I love the look and texture of watercolor, I use Epson Signature Worthy Professional Papers for all of my work. My favorite subject is birds, but any subject in the natural world has my attention, from bobcats, to bumble bees, to floral landscapes.
The art organizations I belong to include NANPA (North American Nature Photography Association), Galena Center for the Arts, Art Center of Corpus Christi, and Rockport Center for the Arts, Rockport, Texas.
My art work is a major happiness factor in my life. My love of birds led me to specialize in fine art illustrations of wildlife, establishing In Touch with Nature, LLC in 2005.
I joined Galena Center for Arts many years ago and show my work there regularly. I’ve also been a member of the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation since moving to Galena, serving 13 years on the Board of Directors.
